Local Election 2018 Preview: Richmond upon Thames

13 April 2018

Current Make Up: Con 39 Lab 0 LD 15 Others 0

Control: Conservative

Projection: Conservative/Lib Dem fight

Richmond upon Thames appears to be a relatively safe Conservative council at present. However, with all the seats up for election, anything could happen. The Lib Dems will hope to capitalise on any Conservative losses here, as the main opposition to them on the council. The Lib Dems have run the council at several times in recent decades – 1990-2002 and 2006-2010. But the Conservatives have been in control since 2010 and gained seats in 2014’s elections.

With Labour having no presence on the council, and the area voting strongly to Remain in the EU in the referendum, the yellows will be hoping to muster anti-Conservative and anti-Brexit voters to make inroads into the Conservative domination of the council. The contest takes on an extra dimension for Vince Cable’s party with memories of the close loss of Richmond Park to Zac Goldsmith still fresh in the memory. A good night for the party will see them make gains here at the Conservatives’ expense – though will it be enough to wrest control of the council out of the Tories’ hands?
