Projection: Conservative/Labour fight
Tamworth represents an interesting Con/Lab contest ahead of the local elections. As Stephen Bush notes,it represents a tough test for Labour in terms of making gains, as it’s the kind of ‘suburban’, pro-Leave area in which Corbyn struggled to make major gains at last year’s general election.
At present, the Tories look strong in Tamworth, holding 20 of 30 seats on the council. The Tories have run the council since 2004. But Labour have been strong here in the past, running the council between 1990 and 2004. A good night for Labour will see them make some modest gains in places like Tamworth – building on the 8.7 percentage point increase achieved in last year’s general election.
